The Functional Benefits of Frozen Yogurt

Once overlooked in favor of more mainstream diet trends, the gut microbiome is now recognized as a key player in everything from digestion and immunity to mental health and longevity. Gut health is no longer just about digestion—it’s about total wellness.

And that’s good news for frozen yogurt. Unlike regular ice cream, frozen yogurt is made using live cultures, such as Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus, which help maintain a healthy balance of gut microbiota. Consumers should be aware that not everything marketed as “frozen yogurt” contains significant amounts of live cultures.

The Science Behind the Gut-Brain Connection

For decades, gut health was primarily linked to digestion, but science has unveiled a far deeper connection. The gut is often called the “second brain” due to its ability to communicate with the nervous system and influence mood and cognition. After reviewing ten years of original research published in PubMed, the authors concluded that the balanced microbiome reduces inflammation, improves immune response, enhances digestion and nutrient absorption, and supports mental well-being by producing neurotransmitters like serotonin that affect mood regulation, cognitive function, and stress resilience.

Gut Health Is Trending

Several factors have driven the surge in interest in gut health:

  • Rise of Functional Foods – Consumers now favor foods that offer more than just flavor. Probiotic-rich yogurts, fermented foods, and prebiotic supplements are booming in popularity.
  • Personalized Wellness – People seek tailored health solutions, and gut microbiome testing makes personalized nutrition more accessible.
  • Holistic Approach to Health – The wellness industry is shifting toward viewing health as an interconnected system, with gut health playing a crucial role.
  • Social Media & Influencer Impact – Nutritionists and wellness influencers have brought gut health mainstream, making topics like fiber intake, gut bacteria, and digestive enzymes widely discussed.

Emerging Trends in Gut Health

  • Collagen & Gut Repair – Collagen peptides are now marketed as gut-healing, helping maintain a healthy intestinal lining and possibly reducing bloating and digestive symptoms
  • Postbiotics – The next frontier of gut health focuses on postbiotics, which are the beneficial byproducts of probiotic bacteria. Postbiotics are the compounds that are the result of probiotics feeding on prebiotics
  • Mental Health & Gut Care – More brands are promoting gut-friendly diets as a way to manage stress, anxiety, and mood.

Froyo and Functional Additives

Frozen yogurt has become a canvas for health-conscious innovations. Many frozen yogurt brands and homemade versions now include:

Additional Probiotics

Smile Yogurt (IG @smileyogurt) partnered with KORRES Asia in 2023 to launch a limited edition Greek Cheese Cup in Hong Kong. The frozen yogurt was made with Korres’ probiotic Greek cheese skincare. The product line claims to strengthen skin and repair skin problems like acne. In 2024, Smile and KORRES launched the Nutritious Skin Cheese Cup, which contained Santorini grapes and Greek cheese. The grapes are rich in antioxidants and used in Korres skincare products.

Collagen

BLK 513 (IG @blk513ph) collaborated with Ancient + Brave in the Philippines to create the Matcha Collagen Beauty Cup for Mother’s Day 2025. The matcha frozen yogurt was infused with Ancient + Brave’s True Collagen. Collagen is said to enhance skin hydration and elasticity, strengthen hair and nails, support joint mobility and recovery, and possibly improve gut health.

48 Collagen Café (IG @48collagencafe) in Paris, France, offers collagen-infused soft serve ice cream and frozen yogurt along with a collagen x LED mask bar.

We anticipate more brands following the lead of health influencers by incorporating functional benefits into their yogurt in the future. There’s also an increased concern about sugar consumption. See our earlier post about the rise of sugar-free frozen yogurt shops for more information.
